BioHistory Seminar: "Mapping Copenhagen 1890-1923. Potentials of the Police Register files"

In recent years, the Copenhagen Stadsarkiv has transcribed the Politietsregisterblade records, that contain information on  almost 2 million citizens’ occupation, family, birth places and mobility patterns within the city between the 1890 and 1923. While mostly used by genealogists so far, this source offers a rich material for researching the development of the Danish capital’s population during industrialization and urbanization. Using GIS, we can trace intensities of social groups, immigration, land use and other aspects of urban social history.  However, this material ,while opening the possibilities of linking to other sources, also poses questions of methodology and use of quantitative historical data, which will be the focus of this presentation.
